Booster Club Information Meeting Notes fpr 2014

Booster Club Parent Kickoff Informational Meeting
2014 High School Softball Teams
Furlong Fieldhouse - 7:00 pm - Wednesday November 6th 2013

Meeting Recap
1.  Joe Cusenza, Booster Club President welcomed the group and introduced the Varsity Coaches:
Dan Roberts, Head Coach, Mike Goldstein and Peter Ramiccio, Assistant Coaches.
Donna Zdanowicz, Junior Varsity Coach and Rebecca Ferguson, Freshman Coach will be in attendance at later meeting.
2.  Pre-season activities, fundraising and fundraising possibilities and objectives were discussed.
-Fundraising:  Players are encouraged to become involved, fundraising benefits the whole team.  Money raised will help subsidize the Varsity spring training trip to Florida, purchase necessary additional equipment, help to defray costs for indoor practice space when needed.  It is also useful for supporting community/team events such as the "Batters Up" season kickoff, Senior Day and the Banquet at the end of the season.
-Canning at King's Supermarket in Upper Montclair for this coming Saturday, November 9th.  Parents should contact Loria Smith if your player can participate this weekend.  There will be additional opportunities throughout the pre-season.  loria_smith@hotmail.com
-Booster Ad Book- information has been sent out for the Booster Ad book and if you have any questions about it at this point, please contact Loria Smith or Colleen Connell.
-BeefSteak Dinner - A longtime MHS Softball tradition, this event will take place in late January/early February.  We will need volunteers to help with the planning, please look for more details in the coming weeks.
3.  Booster Club Dues for 2014 will be $100 per family and will also be applied towards items listed above.  Presently there $8,041.53 in the Booster Club's account and we would like to carry at least a $5000 balance forward at the end of every season.
4.  Discussion of Varsity Spring Training in Florida.
Varsity team will be making a trip to Disney’s Spring Training at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.  This trip will give the Varsity players five days of games and practices, drills & skills, & team building activities.  The players will leave after school on Wed, March 19th and return home, Monday, March 24th.  At this time, we are planning for approximately 13 Varsity Players and 3 coaches will have the opportunity to attend and our hope is to keep the out of pocket expense per family to $500 or less.  Academic time will be slotted into the schedule.  All MHS teachers will be informed of the reason for each student’s absence.  There will also be a community service component for each player who will attend the trip.
5.  Anyone who has a financial issue (all financial issues will be held in the strictest confidence) should contact either Joe Cusenza at jcooz1@aol.com or Colleen Connell at collconnell@aol.com.
6.  Coach Roberts announced off-season training opportunities and preliminary spring season scheduling.  These are not mandatory for players prior to pre-season tryouts, but participation is strongly encouraged.  All players should attend as many sessions as possible.
-Off Season Weight Training will start Tuesday December 3rd at the Fieldhouse.  The Softball Team has been scheduled to use the weight room on Tuesday/Thursday/Friday from 4pm-5pm when school is in session.  They will be supervised by Coach Stoia.  There is no charge for the weight training.
-Speed and Agility Training will start the first week of February at Woodman Field.  The Softball Team has been scheduled to use the track on when school is in session - TBD times/day of week to be confirmed.  They will be supervised by Coach Washington.  There is no charge for this speed and agility training.
After school study groups were discussed to allow for players to do homework while waiting for their training sessions to begin - TBD.
-Batting practice will be arranged off-site Starting in January.  Would like to schedule 8 weeks, 2x per week.  Last year it was approximately $10 per session, but the price is TBD.  It will be indoors and a private coach will be part of the batting practice.  Once we have a time slot and facility secured we will pass on the specifics.
-Game Schedules have not been released at this time, but will be posted as soon as they are available.  FYI:  Typically, the Varsity and JV have the same schedule.  Varsity is playing at home, the JV will also be at home playing the same opponent.  The Freshman team would be playing away - possibly with the same opponent if the school has a freshman team.
7.  The Varsity WILL have games during spring break.  This is necessary due to schedules for our conference (SEC-Super Essex Conference) and deadlines for games being played.  The JV and Freshman schedule during spring break to be determined.
8.  Coach Roberts and Joe Cusenza are working on uniform orders, bowflex nets for batting practice and outfield (portable) fencing for the 2014 Spring Season.  These items are part of the Softball team's athletic department budget and are not the responsibility of the booster club.  They will work with the new Athletic Director, Jeff Gannon, to coordinate these items.
9.  Booster Club Operations:  If you are interested in volunteering for one of the following or have any other ideas, please contact Joe Cusenza or Colleen Connell.  The Booster Club would like to:
-add another Board member (or two),
-would like to explore the possibility of the development of an MHS Softball website
-obtain officers liability insurance coverage, Joe Cusenza will check with Bollinger Insurance to see what is available

If you have any questions, please contact montclairsoftball@gmail.com and we will do everything to help answer your questions.
